Poetry Contest

GET YOUR CREATIVE JUICES FLOWING!

ARTS IN OAKLAND is excited to introduce its summer POETRY CONTEST!! The contest is open to ALL OAKLAND RESIDENTS with student submissions to be broken into Elementary, Middle and High School categories with an additional OPEN CATEGORY for ANY AGE contest participant. Entrants can choose any topic or theme, with full creative liberty in their writing.  However, all entries must be rated G and appropriate for all ages, to be included in the contest.

 

DEADLINE: Contest entries will be accepted until September 15, 2023.

Participants are invited to read their submissions during an " Open Mic Night" event,  where winners will be recognized.

Winning submissions will be publicized locally and on social media. 

 

Submissions will be judged on the following: 

 

• Ideas -Involves the reader's senses, emotions, and imagination. Clear theme and/or mood

• Technique/Style - Poetic devices (rhyme, rhythm, repetition, simile, metaphor, allusion, etc...) are used effectively

• Use of language - Vivid word choice, variety, figurative language, and clear expression of emotion

• Organization - Written cohesively, shows fluency

• Editing - Spelling, grammar, and mechanics are as accurate as intended by the poet
